Ain't We Cute?

Post by 35Z5 on Sun Apr 06, 2014 10:53 pm

A couple little guys...

1939 Airline 93BR-421 & 1947 Emerson 540A...

Unlike most of the mini's, both have true AA5 circuitry...

The #47 dial lamp box is approx 1.5" shorter than a $1 bill...

They made lousy TV's, but, some of their radios were very decent playing, including that one.

I like and collect the mini radio's like these. You have a couple of the better ones here. I like the fact that they fit in the palm of your hand and don't take up much real estate. Don't let their size fool you as they're capable of producing room filling sound and most of them perform well for their size. Nice finds!

When compared side by side, the heavy dose of machine age styling is apparent in the Airline... They also came in red, blue & green...

http://radiophile.com/airli421.htm

I also have the early version of the Emerson with two tubes and some of the four tube Arvins that lack a IF stage branded Kent, Silvertone etc, No doubt the ones MW was referring to when thy said theirs were the best they knew of(And I agree)...

In addition to above, I have some of the mini Japenese radios that were sold in late '50s and early 60s as well...

Some of the mini Japanese radios actually play quite well when rebuilt.
Warning, I have had bad experience with their thin cords, and, plugs. Even had some start sparking inside the plug. Replace the entire cord.

Yeah the JA5s were sold under about every name one could think of, two of mine are branded Dabul & Invicta... Futaba built these, most have their tubes but some came through with Mitsubishi tubes... These are later production, the early ones used a screw in each corner vs plastic pins to hold face in place... Early ones also use a 12BD6 instead of a 12BA6..

So, just out of curiosity, do the dials light-up on those little AA5's?

The Emerson uses a 35W4 & has a dial lamp, the Airline uses a 70L7 for audio output and rectifier, so doesn't have a ready provision for one... The metal cabinet Arvin units have a chicken head knob as pointer, no dial lamps in those either...

Here's a earlier thread on a mini I have called an Oxford;

http://www.tuberadioforum.com/t3198-oxford-model-690

They all seem to have the same tuning dial. Mine varies in cabinet shape from most other Japanese mini's.

On another note, I was not aware that the --L6 tube was also made as a 70 volt 70L6!

Actually they didn't, no such tube as 70L6, the 70L7 is a 35Z4 & 35L6 in same envelope...

There are also 117L7, M7, P7 etc that have audio output and rectifier in same envelope... Were used in cheap phonographs before the days of selenium rectifiers and using a 25L6 in series with motor... They also found a home in some AC/battery portables, farm radios, etc that used a higher power audio output when on AC, vs the puny battery output stage that produce something like a 1/3 watt or less...

I have the ivory version of the midget Airline.  I acquired it from a petite lady who was a college professor.  It says "Mildred" all over it.  She told me that she was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, far away from home in 1938-1939.  Her family sent the radio to her as a Christmas present so "she wouldn't be so lonely."  It's one of those radios I'll never part with.  I think of Mildred every time it comes into view--and it's very visible in my display area.
