Worthless phrases

Post by Wildcat445 on Tue Mar 18, 2014 4:52 pm

Did you ever wonder about the phrasing that sellers and others use to describe something? Phrases that make no sense and provide no useful information whatsoever. I thought it might be fun to list some worthless phrases and see what others could come up with. Nothing vulgar, controversial, blah, blah, blah. This is a family forum.  Laughing

How about "Powers up"? What, exactly, is happening when something "powers up'?

"Needs restored." Duh. Really? Is that the same as "needing restoration"?

"Mint". NOTHING is truly "mint" except new, uncirculated coins.

Come on, guys and gals, jump on in here. There is no wrong contribution, as long as it is clean.  lol!

Regards

WC

"Powers up" means that it withstood the application of mains current without the cataclysmic release of smoke, tar, ozone or electrolytic fiber.  "Mint" is an aroma that you will never smell around a old radio.  "Needs restored" means I started it, I botched it, you finish it.

Needs tubes.
Bulbs light up.
It works fine, but, makes humming noise. Probably needs adjustment.
The turntable goes round, but, no sound, Probably needs a new needle.
It worked when we put it in the attic twenty five years ago..........

My dad would have said a worthless phrase would be son in law but that has nothing to do with radio.  I would think other worthless phrases would be stuff folks put in ads to ad value like art deco,mid century, retro. Many times you see mid century on junk that is not worth much but they want a lot for it. Don't forget shabby chic which really means shoddy S..,err shoddy crap.

I'll just copy and and paste one from Ebay;

You are bidding on a Vintage 1961 Emerson Model G1701 Radio.. Very nice space-age, collectible,  art-deco table radio. Uses tube technology.  Worked for us when tested.  Would look perfect in a restaurant display or themed room.

A collector's wonder.........

In my opinion, it's a wonder if it didn't blow up...

For a GE clock radio on Ebay;

AM works, but only has static hum (could not tune a station). Clock works fine. There is a hole on the top with tape over it. Not sure what may have been there.

So.....static and hum makes a working radio!!!!!!  Rolling Eyes

From ebay.......

We fired 'er up, and, she works great. Just has no sound. I'm sure you guys know how to adjust these.....

The bulb inside lit, and, turntable ran. Only has a loud hum.. I'm sure a new bulb, or, needle will fix this.

"I do not need any help selling this item" Usually accompanies a photo that could best be described as a Rorschach test.

I have also been told by a flea market seller there are a couple wires you twist together and she will start rite up! Is this a car or a radio?
