Favorite country singer

Post by Wildcat445 on Thu Feb 27, 2014 1:10 pm

We had a comment recently by a member stating that Patsy Cline was the queen of country music. Who are you favorite country singers? There is no right or wrong answer here. You can include a singer that is not necessarily a "country" artist. They just need to sing country music. Let's limit this to five at a time, please. Here's mine:

1. Patsy Cline

2. Connie Francis

3. Ray Price

4. Carl Smith

5. Jim Reeves

I like country music and picking my five fave's is pretty hard.

You've been mentioning Vernon Dalhart, Bill. I have been trying to find more of his material. Not easy to find! I have "Wreck of the Old 97" and "When the Work's All Done This Fall", but everyone on the planet has those. His material is too old to be put on a CD compilation. I am struggling to get enough of his material to form an opinion. It sounds interesting if I can get ahold of some.

I'll have to look at my records on Cylinder, and, 78 victors.
But, favorites such as "Prisoner's song", "Wreck of the Shenandoah",
"A boy's best friend is his mother", and, "Jesse James" come to mind.
I also have "Golden Slippers", and, another hot one by him that I've forgotten the title on. They are out there.

I don't have a cylinder record player, I have to borrow one. I put some Uncle Josh cylinder records on CD and they are a pain. Discs are not a big deal, and some sound pretty nice. I'll keep looking around. Thanks.

I'd be interested in any cylinders, including the Uncle Josh for my collection. Only want the cylinders.

My favorite country singer would have to be John Berry. For those who may not be familiar with him, he was at the top of the charts in the 90's. He's got a very powerful voice, he's a great writer and he's just an all around awesome performer and a nice guy. He does a concert in Macon every year at Christmas time, the first half is his music and the second half is Christmas music. My wife and I attend as often as we can. When he sings Oh Holy Night and gets to the "fall on your knees" part, it sends chills up my spine and I want kneel down right then and there.

Favorite Country Singer

I can't really pick out five, but I just want to throw one out there----The Carter Family. As a kid I was rooting around in a uncle's outbuilding in rural W.VA,I came across some old 78's of the Carter Family and was completely amazed at the guitar playing on those songs. Around the same time I saw the Carter Family on tv, but can't remember what show. I do remember that Faron Young was on that show and June Carter was telling jokes to him. This was in the late 50's or early 60's.

I am listening to "Hank Locklin Sings Hank Williams" RCA Victor LSP-2997 from 1964 as we speak.  Hank Williams was one of the greats for sure.  Nearly every country music artist recorded an album of Hank Williams material at some point in their careers. Connie Francis and Patsy Cline seem to be on nearly everyone's list.

When I was going up in the 1950's my Dad would play C&W music during our dinner. He had a lot of Hank Williams and some Buck Owens. My sister used to love to listen to Buck Owens.

Buck Owens was a prolific recording artist until the death of Don Rich in 1974. That pretty much ended Buck Owens. I've got a lot of his early stuff. Good stuff, no doubt.
