ST (Sarkes Tarzian) recording tape

Post by Wildcat445 on Tue Feb 11, 2014 1:55 pm

My mom worked for Sarkes Tarzian, Inc in Bloomington, Indiana for several years. ST made recording tape at that plant. I have several rolls of tape from ST. It is approaching 60 years old, and still works just fine. I bought Sony tape in later years. A curious fact I have discovered is that the ST tape still work well in my old Voice Of Music tape recorder, while the Sony tape squeals and squeaks when run on a tape recorder without pinch wheels. Wonder what Sarkes Tarzian did to its tape that keeps it from squealing when it runs? I usually clean the tape heads and drive system when the squealing starts. Sometimes that works, sometimes not.

Maybe they used a additive to the recording surface that lubricates it. I had a boss that had been a broadcast engineer at a tv and radio station in Michigan and he would always finish cleaning fixed tape heads by applying a turtle wax shine on them. It's always worked for me too.
