Another new guy

Post by Greg Davis on Sun Feb 09, 2014 1:07 pm

I found this forum when searching for information about the Precision 912 tube tester I bought yesterday at an antique store (for $56). I found a nice thread in the Test Equipment section, and since the administrator had a question answered by one of the books that came with my unit, I decided to register and post the answer.

I have dozens of tube radios. Most are from the 40s - 50s, but some date back to the 20s and 30s. My interest in radios had two sources. When I was a kid we had an old cathedral style tube unit on display in the dining room. We never used it, but it was there and I believe it did work. In any case, my parents gave it to me so now it takes up space in my collection. Most of the other tube sets were acquired due to a fascination with Bakelite shells, so I have dozens of those units. My fascination with the old battery units from the 20s derived from a lack of understanding of how the three dials worked, quite honestly. Well, that and a love of old things.

The other facet of my radio collecting is my transistor set collection. That started in an effort to reclaim my past, when I had a love for an old GE unit called the "Red Baron". Since reacquiring that, I have amassed dozens of others, including some rare Toshibas. This is really still the heart of my radio collection, mostly because they take up less space.

I bought the tube tester because I would like to restore some of the plastic shelled radios, if for no other reason than to be able to say I did. It's a hobby... it doesn't have to make sense.

Welcome aboard Greg !

I know exactly which unit you have--in regards to the Red Baron. I have the Blue Max. If you want to collect the "trifecta", you need the the Red Baron, the Blue Max and The Captain, all introduced about 1971.

It's a great bunch here, you'll like it.

Hey Doctor. Yes, I do have a Blue Max as well... but I never heard of "The Captain". Lordy, now I have something else to seek.

Hey Greg, my mistake--there are actually (4) radios apart of this design family. I completely forgot "The Aztec".

I have this same ad:
