Hawaiian Lap Steel Guitar

Post by Wildcat445 on Sat Feb 08, 2014 5:31 pm

I had heard of this instrument, but, until yesterday, had never seen one. I had the privilege of attending a show where an artist had one and played it. I have a picture of it, but I did not see a name on it. It was from 1931, and was affectionately known as "the Hawaiian Lapburner". It is allegedly the first electrified instrument made. It looks like a pie pan with a fret on it. It has a more mellow sound that the traditional bench-style steel guitar. It is played across your lap, much like some played a dobro.

If any of you are planning a trip to the Phoenix area, you might try to get tickets to the Arizona Opry. I lived in Phoenix for 25 years, and never heard of it until three years ago.

Regards
