GE Trimline 500 poor quality sound

Post by PhonoBrit on Wed Jan 29, 2014 1:30 pm

Very tinny poor quality sound (no bass), I know these can sound better as I've heard the same model before. Any ideas?

I'm sure the true phono-experts will chime in, but off the cuff, I'd say if it isn't something obvious like damaged or warped speaker cone(s) or cartridge issues, I'd say you've got some worn out electrolytics and possibly out-of-tolerance resistors affecting your circuit characteristics and making for poor performance.

At first I thought this this thread was about telephones  Laughing

Could bee speaker cones are frozen, or, cracked crystal in cartridge.

Agreed but i've heard the same model before and it at least had "some" bass and projection.

The position in which the unit was placed has some effect on sound.

I'd try a set of headphones and see if there is any difference That could help eliminate the speakers as a source of your trouble. If it has a variable tone control, make sure the control is clean and functional.

This particular model Trimline is one of the last that were made in the series and uses the same amp as the GE Wildcat which was designed to drive 2X4 speakers. You wont get as much fidelity as the earlier model Trimlines even though it has 8 inch speakers. To get a better sounding Trimline you will have to go to one of the older models. The original Trimline 500's had a separate bass control and used the deluxe tonal 1 changer. A new cartridge may help some but don't expect alot out of this particular machine.
