Zenith 5s237 Chairside Tube Radio

Heres my latest radio going. Its a Zenith Chairside 5s237 radio. I picked it up at the Nashville Music City meet a few years back.
When I picked it up it looked like this.

I decided to look at it a few weeks ago. I recapped it and to my surprise it worked good. I was expecting more than caps. Here is a video just after I got it going.

I then worked on the case. I had to scrape a piece of veneer off to replace it. A 4 inch strip of veneer was shot. It was in a god location to not be seen, just under the radio on the other side of its book case. I also had to reglue a lot of the veneer on the sides. You can see how the veneer was loose in the video. I used almost 20 clamps at once to glue it back. After that was done I stripped it and used lacquer to coat it. Here is a  picture of it now.

It plays decent. It needs a antenna but I made one out of a old TV picture tube degausing coil. I had a small one and I was able to mount it into the top of the book case out of the way. It was a nice project that was easier than I expected and a neat little radio. I have it now next to my chair in the living room.

Thanks. It plays AM and yes it has shortwave as well the best I can tell. I was able to tune in some on the SW band as well. I really like it.

I hear you. There is quite a dramatic difference in these radios between photographs and the real thing. This is something I am learning all too slow.
