Back in 1995 I was teaching a class in Rio De Janeiro and mentioned lightning protection. The guys in the class laughed and told me they didn't have any lightning storms there. looks like they were wrong!

No joking here. When I was in Junior High, for two years we had a forest ranger come to our science class, and, talk about how he survived lightning strikes.
The third year someone said the last time he was hit that year he was killed. Some people just ain't careful enough.

Believe it or not I have been hit indirectly twice by lightning. Once years ago in our old house. Lightning hit a telephone pole outside. We heard thunder and all of a sudden I got shocked when the lightning traveled down the line and hit the phone in the house. I wasn't using it but I was about a foot or so away sitting on a bench. It did not feel good. It was like getting shocked from a old TVs flyback. Almost knocked me off the bench I was sitting on. The other time I was in the house as well. I don't know how I got shocked but I was looking out the window at the storm. I don't know how I got shocked but I heard thunder and then I got shocked somehow. It wass't as bad as the first one but it wasn't a good feeling.
