Choke specs for Edison R6 R7

Post by fordtech on Thu Aug 29, 2013 4:01 pm

Hello, would anyone here know the specs of any of the chokes, specifically in my case the audio choke on an Edison R6 or R7? I want to replace this choke because the resistance seems too high on it after repairing an open in it, but they have no published specs IE Henrys, voltage, resistance. If you have one I would appreciate if you could check at least the resistance across the two contacts. I am doing a full electrical refurbish on it.

Thanks!
John

yes you will find it in Riders vol 1 Edison section page 1-7and 8  (PDF page 295 schematic & page 296 parts list)

20 henry --375 ohm choke , the schematic shows a tap on the choke but not its reading. So if you test that part of it has to be less if it's conducting at that tap.

Thank you sir! I believe that it the power supply choke though. It does have a tapped choke and Im very happy to have recieved that spec. The one I am looking for is the audio choke which only has 2 terminals like a regular inductor. I sure would love to have access to the riders volumes. Sounds like they have a lot more information than the readily found schematic.

If you can find the spec on the two terminal audio choke I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Thanks again Cliff!

It depends on the transformer. They don't use chokes. One winding, at least, is very high. Don't remember exatly, but, I think it's around 4K.
Riders doesn't give resistances of the transformers.

Here is the service manual. If you scroll down to the schematic you will see this unit has L26 and L27, this is the tapped filter choke A which is still good. Then it has L17 audio choke B, that is the one out of spec I am trying to find the value of and has no tap.
It also has another choke in the reciever unit L16 and that one is still good.

May I see pictures of your chassis'? Both of them?? This is not the C-4 radio phonograph.
I had that model, and, it's not the same.

No, definitely not a radio phonograph or C4. This is R6. Here are some pics pre-restored.

No similarity whatsoever, and, non interchageable parts.
I'd leave the choke alone until you try the set.
That high resistance may be normal.
The C4 doesn't even use that choke, nor a tone circuit.
I see many differences in the two...

Some of your most important parts still appear good.

Another user posted on this forum some months back with a full chasis set and he appearantly didnt want to tackle the repairs needed since he was missing the speaker, cabinet and wiring was burned up. He agreed to sell me the chasis for spare parts for this one... until he figured out they weigh a lot and he refused to ship them to me.
What a waste. He probably threw them away.

That is a waste. I still say go ahead with repairs, and, see what happens. You may be pleasantly surprised. If not, I'm sure something can still be done.

Well I got it all finished mechanically, retested all the tubes and installed everything and have been listening to the one station I can recieve so far for about an hour now. No smoke, no overheating... I only have about a 30 foot wire for an antennna right now and I live in a pretty remote area with only a few AM stations anyway. Lots of buzzing on other stations.

Well its a start anyway.. she sound pretty good for 83 years old and the tone control works well and plenty of volume.

Like I said, nothing wrong with the choke.
It may need neutralizing, and, a thirty foot wire may not be enough. In any case, congradulations. Did you test all the resistors??

Yes, so many were so far out of whack that I replaced them all. Even the one they hid down inside one of the rf coils...Very Happy Guess how long it took me to find that one.. LOL
