Origin of "score"? Empty Origin of "score"?

I see references about someone "scoring" a piece of equipment. Since I am from the old school, I think of someone scribing/scoring a mark with some sharp tool onto a an item. So, where did this come from?

Colloquialisms, Harold. Slang. An example of buthering the Queen's English. I use that terminology frequently. I find is less stuffy than saying that I "acquired", or "purchased", or "sourced" an item. Is that a character weakness? Guilty as charged.

Or hit the objective target and came away with it as the prize. Entitled to display like a medal or ribbon in some cases. (Scored a direct hit on a target)
I think it was a direct comment or term as related to a military target being hit and allowing one to display the object as a flag or plane, ship, or enemy as dispatched. The symbols were a moral booster for soldiers in battle.

It's been used in baseball and hockey forever, and I'm sure I remember "scoring with a girl" as high school slang fifty years ago.
