Alley find. Empty Alley find.

Apparently someone got evicted and all of their stuff is in the alley. I snagged a 32" flat panel TV. This has all the bells and whistles you could ever want. It also has a cracked screen and the cord has been cut. So far I don't consider either of these a deal breaker.

Isn't the outer screen just a protector? And could it be as simple as replacing some caps?

Worse case scenario- it goes to the local dump and I'm out some time and parts.
Best case scenario I find a remote and a way to mount it, then sit back to watch my new TV

I have not worked on flat screen TVs much but I have worked on lots of computer flat screens. As far as they go if the screen is cracked they can still work fine. The computers sometimes have a glass plate sandwiched between a plastic outer piece.  If it is too far gone the electronics may be fine and worth saving. Then if you run across one with a good screen just build one out of the tw broken ones. I have made a lot of money over the years by taking two broken pieces and making one good one. Give it a try.

If it is an lcd display there would probably be darkened areas where the crack is if the envelope or the polarizing material were damaged. I've seen several accounts of the caps being distended or ruptured on the affected board. MCM electronics sells some pieces parts and portions for the flats. I'd check the supplies, try it and if it looks promising, scour the thrift stores for a new front glass.

I use MCM all the time.  I'm going to pop it apart tomorrow and see what there is to see.
So-more later

It's heartening to see the renaissance of TV repair these monoliths have brought about.

I've worked on a few LCD tvs / computer monitors. The only issue that I've ever seen is bad caps in the power supply circuit. It's usually pretty easy to tell which ones are bad because they tend to swell up.

Well-
Yes and-
No.
There was a blown 4 amp fuse that I replaced.  I got my "widow Maker" And powered the set up.  I was next to the door in case it caught fire and plugged it into a 20 amp breaker dedicated to the AC.
No parts start to burn, no caps blew up. even the fuse didn't blow.
Time to flip it around and look at the front.
How pretty.  Every crack is outlined in white.  If you press on the screen it shows up- as a white blob.

Oh well, lots of good parts like toroidal coils, nice speakers, (they can join the pile), and boards with lots of caps and resistors.  Not that bad for dragging home a piece of plastic.  It would have been nicer if it worked, but hey-ain't my day
