Handy way to read my old signal generator frequency

Post by Ragwire on Mon Jul 15, 2013 10:55 pm

Here's a handy little RF amp I whipped up this weekend. Now my old Heathkit signal generator's frequency can be read on a DMM on the Hz setting. Not as accurate as an expensive frequency counter, but far better than reading the analog scale of the generator. My DMM requires 0.7 V to register anything below 10 MHz, and 1V for higher than 10 MHz.

Thanks! It works great. Tuning the generator gives me a nice digital readout of what I'm really feeding the radio circuit. Ought to be great for alignments.
Just a couple 2N2222 in parallel wired common emitter. Input and output X-fmrs are hand wound (and sloppy) at about 3:1 in and 1:3 out on ferrite rod, but air core should be fine. About 200 turns of #30 maget wire on the high Z sides. RC=~120 ohms, RE=~30 ohms, RC-Vcc =~2.5K, RB-Gnd =~560 ohms. Caps at input and emitter resister bypas are .01 microfarad. No promises this is the best way, but it works for me and was easy to design.

I should add that I use the input side of the amplifier to the radio because it has the blocking capacitor. The output is just for monitoring frequency to a meter.
