The pieces, parts and portions aren't priced badly, but what the infrastructure to fabricate the tube would cost must be a fortune!

Build your own tubes

Post by dan88king on Fri Oct 18, 2013 4:10 pm

I saw evidence of this having been attempted back in 1961 or 1962, when I was in high school. In the physics lab there was a box of miscellaneous electrical stuff, and in it was a broken home-built triode vacuum tube that some students had made, It looked like one of the really old "broom-handle" tubes that had only wire leads coming through one or both ends, and were clipped or soldered into the radio circuit. When I asked the teacher how they got the vacuum in the glass envelope, all he said was that they used a chemical getter. I never found out if it actually worked, but a triode of that shape is about as basic as you could get, a tubular plate, a wire filament strung down the center, and a grid in between.

I might go this far: http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com/els/hm-triode-el.htm

And I have experimented with this: http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com/flame-amp/flameamp.htm
Although it is not a vacuum tube at all, it is a flame triode.
