How to adjust plate spacing in 1920's RCA bathtub tuning cap?

Post by Rich K. on Mon Mar 25, 2013 2:52 pm

I just got an RCA Radiola 60. Looks okay inside, and has obviously been worked on (some modern wires replacing the cotton covered stuff), but the dial is not centered in its window. Looking inside, the plates of that big "bathtub" tuning condenser are shifted to the right by about the same amount as the dial is in the window. The tuner moves smoothly enough, and the tuning wheel does not appear to have the dreaded "pot metal disease", so is there a practical way to adjust those plates and at the same time get the dial/wheel back on center?

EDIT: It DOES have pot metal disease. I guess I will just swap in a pristine tuning cap and wheel from a Radiola 18 RF chassis I have (I don't own a Radiola 18 anyway, just the RF chassis). They're identical.
