It's sitting in a garage.

Price is FREE!

Still has large paper tube in the back.

Definately! I have that model, and, after all bad rubber wiring, filters, caps, and, resistors are replaced, this set plays great! Welcome to forums.

Don't really have much room. It is here in the NE corner of the city of Detroit. Anyone have an interest?

Well,
I am going to go look it over and take photos and get it. Otherwise it will be broken up and thrown away. Just 1 1/2 blocks away.

Please rescue it. It's worth saving. If I was in Det. I'd save it myself.

For some reason I can't load my photos, but except for a small area on the top where the varnish is turned grey and is flaking, this radio is in excellent shape. Beautiful finish and all the knobs and trims in great shape. I will put it in my van tonight or tomorrow night. I'll get more photos too.

Congrats! Never pass up a free radio like that.

Like many of the era, I believe that is actually an RCA Victor radio. GE used their chassis and then private labeled them. If so, it will be an excellent performing radio if restored properly.

Nope. It's not an RCA. It's really made by GE, but, in spite of that, is really an excellent set. I can give you many tips on the restoration on this set as I had to do it all.
There are some crittical points that will affect how well it plays.
But, believe me that done properly, it is a great playing set.
You wouldn't believe the bass response!
All I can say is "Vah, Vah, Vah Voom!".

Post by bczygan on Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:40 am

Well,
It belonged to the parents of a guy I knew. They were of this era. His dad was AAF pilot in WWII. He inherited it. But he set up a stereo with Wharfedale speakers (Circa 61', Ever hear of them?) and set this aside. He was our neighborhood group president and just died in Jan. age 65. He had wanted me to maybe sell this on CL or find a home for it. Like everything he had, it was pretty well taken care of and pristine.

New owner just wants to be able to park 2 cars in a very small 2 car garage. So it would go on the burn pile, or just get broken up and stuffed in dumpsters.

Now I am thinking, if no one shows an interest in a while, I might just tackle checking it out. What is a good procedure for that?

I see...

Well, whatever you do, DON'T PLUG IT IN AND TRY IT.

Old radios have components that go bad with age that can cause catastrophic failures in hard-to-find parts.

I see you are a newbie to the site, are you new to old radios/electronics as well? The reason I ask is this is a great place to learn, but if you are a beginner I would suggest learning on a much simpler set before diving into a console.

In the electrical restoration part of this board, I'm doing a step by step on a good beginners set to kinda show the ropes. The simple plastic sets are easier to work on when starting out. Just food 4 thought.

Seriously tho, if you keep that, that is a nice score, great condition!

NEW TO IT ALL.

I am ham (AA8MF) so I know a component is dead, when the smoke that they put in it at the factory, leaks out.

Soldering skills and equipment, Very Minimal.

Can follow simple step by step instructions (Wife trained me).

It just begs to be turned on, but I understand.

I had an old Atwater Kent I bought at a high end thrift store, complete with speaker. Turned it on, and it was playing tunes from the 30's and 40's. Thought I had entered a time warp, but it was just tuned to a local (Real old) oldies station...

This radio is far too good for firewood. I'd be interested if someone brought it to Florida. It is pretty nice. Physically better than mine.
I repeat the request, don'nt plug it in. You would be letting the smoke out big time. I know these sets very well. You should start with simpler sets. Follow that course here. It is a very good beginner's course. Perhaps he can also start a course on soldering techniques??
You do have a very nice radio there. It's worth saving. Hey, anybody coming this way that cold bring it along? If so, I want it.
Nice, nice radio.......
By the way.... I have a thread here on rebuilding this set. Go read it. I'll be back shortly with the link.

The GE has been restored. It had a LOT of cabinet problems. There were two large spots on top where plants obviously sat for years.
The Philco is still waiting. One reason is that I'm trying to find a cartridge for the turntable. I got both it and a 'chair side radio', (Which is a really nice radio), for $70.
At the moment both speakers have been removed and I've stuck the front speakers of my surround system inside. That has worked out really well.

Got It!!!

Was worried about putting it in the van by myself (E350). Needn't have worried. Was very light for me.

Now to find a safe place for it.

Maybe an honored place in the living room once I get THAT cleared.

I REALLY would like to read some step by step threads on working on old radios like this. And especially this particular one.

Anyone have the schematic for it?

Just go to Nostalgia Air and click on "Resources". Scroll down until you find General Electric. Click on that and find your model.

Dont know much about the radio, but do about Warfedale speakers from 1961. If you can get them, GET THEM.. Being from 1961 i bet the are model 60's with 12" woofers in them. They are nice sounding speakers, but will need a new crossover capacitor(s) which are easy to replace and under 5.00 if you use inexpensive non-polar electrolytic caps. I have a very nice set, and they boom very well for there age. Here is a pic of of one of my model 60's.
