Audio Amp query

Post by jeepinjeepin on Sun Feb 17, 2013 7:38 pm

I'm hoping someone can help me ID this old piece so I might be able to make it run again, assuming it ran before that is. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshwebb/8484130316/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshwebb/8483036101/

Looks like a old amp from a record player, probably late 50s I am guessing. You can usually replace the caps and test the tubes to get it to work. A lot of people reuse these as amps for radios and other stuff. I have one guy that likes to collect these things and I rebuild them for him. He usually brings me a radio or to for a trade in.

Ok, that makes sense. I know so little about this stuff, but I didn't see anything that resembled a tuner.

Can you tell if it is anything worth tinkering with or should I just toss it?

I wouldn't toss it. If you don't want to fix it put it on ebay and sell it. But don't put a huge price on it. Start it at say 1 to 5 bucks and see where it goes. Who knows it might fetch enough to get a good meal on the town.

I wouldn't throw it out. It has at least some collector value to it.
It may very well be worth repairing. Pictures would certainly help. What is the name, and, model number of the set?
Does it have a case?
Does it look complete?
Pictures could be a big help.

I agree that it's a phonograph amp with volume and tome control. It looks like it was from a "suit case" type phonograph.

This looks like an amplifier from a portable record player. Not a kit radio. Looks like a fairly low grade amp.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna pass on this one. It has whetted my appetite though. There may be a tube radio in my future. I did end up offering it up to ebay. Someone is interested enough. It has a $0.99 bid.
