Speaker for Philco PT-6 needed

Post by tubesrgr8 on Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:11 pm

This one was found in the trash, the guy who rescued it cleaned the wooden cabinet and got it looking real nice. When he found out I collect, we made a suitable swap, and I started to look it over. Chassis was apparently recapped, guesstimate 40 yrs ago (Sprague Black Beauties) so that will be re-done. All tubes check good within reason, should work fine. But the speaker is totally without cone or voice coil! So I'm looking for a (hopefully) exact replacement w/field coil. Alternately a 4x6 pm could be cobbled in. A quick check looks like speaker repair may cost more than I want to spend on it. Does anyone have a speaker available for the PT-6?

Thanks,
Larry

A quick look at description and photos suggests they are different cabinets for the same chassis. See if the PT-4 speaker is (approx) 4x6 with field coil. Thanks!

Still hoping to locate exact replacement. The speaker mounts to the chassis via field coil, and the slide rule dial mounts to the speaker basket's two upper holes. Any other ideas? Would rather avoid having this spkr reconed. Thanks.

Welcome to TRF!

You may be aware of this, but you can sub a permanent magnet speaker into that set by replacing the field coil with a resistor of approximately the same resistance as the old field coil. A ten watt resistor should work. PM speakers should be easier to find and cheaper, if that would help you. And good luck.

Thanks, it's the field coil mount to the chassis and dial mounting to the upper speaker frame that makes it a bit more than subbing a PM speaker. Would surely be possible, however.

Quick question. If I want to sub a 4x6 pm speaker, where would I get one these days? I still have a new round 4" pm left over from another project, but searching now, I don't see much besides car audio (huge magnets) and odd, usually small, specialty transducers.
