Just gonna throw this out.....

Post by Dr. Radio on Thu Dec 27, 2012 9:13 pm

Any thoughts on this...

On the other forum, there is a man who goes by the handle of "Badrestorer" who has taken the time to do step-by-step restos on various radios. He posts pics and explanations and makes one long thread from start to finish. This is entertaining for the the more seasoned restorers and very informative for the noobies.

Would there be any interest here? Anyone could step up to the bat...I'd like to do some (one), time allowing...or this site allowing....I've got a "patient" in mind, a late '50s GE AC/DC radio....we could cover all aspects, safety, electrolytic replacements, IF transformer rebuilding, cleaning, oiling, cabinet restoration, etc.

So yeah, just gonna throw that idea out for you to chew on... Surprised

It would be a nice compliment to Bill's television and phonograph restorations.

I think it's a great idea. I'd say with enough good photos of the different steps, it could be very helpful. I'd say go for it.
Thanks.

It might also serve the "Noob/Beginner" population on the steps and procedures ( Generically speaking ) with any similar chassis they might be trying to restore ... That would be a kind contribution to this board. Cool

BTW--"badrestorer" (i think) goes by "joernone" on youtube, and has some lengthy multipart "work-a-longs" on various radio projects. I'm a rank beginner, so I can't speak to his credentials, but I have enjoyed watching his videos, and learned a lot from them. I for one would love to see a restoration thread like this.

Maybe post the links on here and they can be moved to a separate section, by Bill or Cliff.

OK, here are some youtubers I have watched that have extensive radio repair videos:

http://www.youtube.com/user/retrochad

http://www.youtube.com/user/bandersentv

That's just a few, there are some others too.

Okay, glad to see there is indeed genuine interest in this endeavor. Razz

I think it would make for a nice thread during the winter time. Can't do a whole lot anyway since its been bitterly cold outside Crying or Very sad

Couple other points;

If I go ahead and start this (looking at January at the soonest), I ask that we keep it civil and cut me some slack silent , as I'm no expert, nor do I claim to be... going to go through things how I usually do, input welcome as debate is good, just don't want things to go south right away on little stuff like "why are you replacing that if it plays?!" etc.

I'll use Photobucket for picture storage. Not sure how much I get. I'm not a paid member of that site. Seems like with recent updates they now give you more storage.

How to you feel about a printed circuit board radio? I'm leaning towards this model I bought back in the late '90s and it has been untouched as-is ever since.....(the radio in this link has been painted, it is supposed to white):

Since radios span from crystal sets to the transistors, I think any would create a good project. I'd suggest doing what you are most comfortable with. JMO

Most of us have chosen this site because we prefer civil discourse. That shouldn't be too much of a worry. Printed circuits have their own issues and should be a good subject.

You can't POSSIBLY get anything done with such a neat bench! I'll be willing to wager that there are old caps, and other junk, on the back of my bench, about six inches deep, that have been there for 40 years. My bench is over 12 feet long and nearly 3 feet deep, and I usually have to move something to get a little AA5 on the bench. I can't work without a certain degree of chaos. Part of the fun is looking for tools, then, after I find them, trying to remember what I was doing! My wife thinks that my shop will be the subject of "Hoarders, Buried Alive" one of these days!

A benefit to working on a plastic radio, is that we won't get into the old "no poly" debate.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Thanks for sharing.

Regards

WC
