Hickok or B&K tube tester

Post by ka5row on Tue Dec 25, 2012 10:06 pm

Looking to get a tube tester maybe a Hickok 6000-A ( Quality tester by name ) or an B&K 707 / 747 due to it being the newest of the two.

So what do you think?

Hickok is much better. I never liked the switches in B&Ks.

I also agree with JohnnyS ... I'm partial to Hickoks Quality ... My fav is a 752A which does a great job, especially on the Audio stuff Cool

I did have a pal who passed a few years ago who swore by the B&K 747 but he indicated a common issue ( easily reparable ) that caused the meter on them to pin backwards ... Unfortunately I don't recall the fix but it was an easy repair and not expensive.

Good luck with your choice they're both decent testers.

The problem is it uses light bulbs for a bridge circuit.

So When one of the bulbs goes kaput, then you get the pegged pointer.
Easy fix. Replace both the bulbs at the same time!

I have two B&Ks, 707 ($35)and 747 Solid state($70)and got them a lot cheaper too.

Hickoks are OK if you have the Big bucks and to impress others, although I would like to get one, but I am content with the Ford rather than the Lincoln. Cheaper to repair IMHO
Now the Military Hicocks are the way to go as they meet Military quality better than the civilian issue, because of better parts required. But again MONEY, DEMAND and Pride.

Hicock did make some unpopular ones too, due to issues that they had.

Bought a Hickok 6000 tube tester today. Should be here in a week or so.
Got it at a Ford price hope it works as stated.
