Roots in our sewer line Empty Roots in our sewer line

Post by ChrisH664 on Fri Dec 07, 2012 7:17 pm

Like clockwork every 2 years we have to have our sewer line roto-rooted to be rid of hair thin tree roots growing into our sewer line. I Googled up some preventative measures but nothing sounded too definite. One mentioned flushing 4lbs affraid of rock salt down the toilet every 2 months to ward off tree roots. Seems extreme to me. Anyone else have the same problem or any preventative measures? Of course a new sewer line would fix it but I'd rather spend the $75 every two years till it can be rooted no more.

I saw on one of the home improvement programs that they can insert a poly or plastic sleeve up to 70 to over 100 feet long into a pipe and blow ( inflate) it up to fit. Within 5 to 10 minutes it hardens, and seals any cracks.

I worked for a plumber for a while. There is suppose to be some type of stuff you can flush and it will keep roots to the minimum. I don't remember what it was but maybe some one will. I have also heard that planting copper around the line will keep roots out. I don't know if it is true but someone I talked to swore by it.

Many years ago I think they used copper sulfate to kill roots. Might want to Google it.

I had that problem also and it's fixed. I had my friend bring in his mini- backhoe and dig up all the old pipe from the house to the septic tank and replace it with PVC pipe. The roots won't grow through the PCV. Once you have roots in the sewer line you will always have them until you dig and replace.

My sisters' tree decided it really liked the water in her sewer line. It put its' roots in and broke up 3 sections of tile. I had to donate the $ I was saving for a new engine to cut her tree and lay new tile.
