Phooey!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went through alot of trouble to add a 150 ohm resistor incase that would improve the set...
When I got the set up, the focus was actually worse!
Now, I have to remove the resistor, replace a wire I cut in two to instlall the part, and, go back to the way it was. And, Honestly, I don't know what's wrong.
I'm going to have to try to figue out why it won't adjust properly.
This is very upsetting.

Hang in there Bill, I'm enjoying the project. Heck it already looks as good as our first TV.

That bad? I usually see far better focussing than this. I'm really dissappointed. I think I'll start checking power supply voltages in ernest.
To top it off my vert. is acting up again.
The picture keeps jittering up, and, down.
Thanks. I'll keep trying. Not giving up after all I've gone through.

Your pictures do look better than our first TV especially when you toss in all the fading and weak signals. It is hard to remember but I think it was a 1951 Admiral...drum tuner. ??

Yes. At that time, Admiral was using Stnadard Cloleman tuners, which were an excellent tuner. At the time of the pictures, Embarassed
I had cable jury irgged. I repaired that properly tonight, and, cleared up that problem.
But, I'm sure dissappointed in the quality of the picture, right now.

Project ended in disgrace. I found my problem. I don't know where these Admiral speakers I have came from, but, according to sam's, I have the wrong resistance field coil.
Schematic calls for a dc resistance of 85 ohmns.
The one I've been using , I didn't test before., is 995 ohms.
The other is 665 ohms.
I'm back out of luck.
If I used a resistor I'd have to use at least 75 ohms, at at least 25 watts.
Plus, I'd have to add filtering to replace lost filtering it had on old field coil speaker.
I stupidly thought the Admiral speakers I have would bave been that resistance. Ends up I was completely wrong.......
I had the junk speaker from the set, but, like an idiot, after removing parts, I apparently threw it away. Stupid? No. More like idiot!
Chassis is going back unfinnished in cabinet tommorrow.

Yikes. Sorry to hear about the problem, but usually time will straighten things out. Sometimes it is good to get away from a problem project for a while...before you think about taking a hammer to it. Wink

Yes, but, it has to be a resistance of 85 ohms, and, an amperage rating of 225ma, plus, the original had a fairly high inductance rating.
Can anyone help on that?

My luck has improved slightly.
There is both good, and, bad news.....
Here are the details....

Last night I decided to try the other slightly lower resistance speaker. I wired it up.
My B+ has increased alot. I't darned near correct voltage at full line voltage.
Sound is louder.
Picture is brighter.
Focus is better, though still out of range, and, out of focus.
However, I now have an agc problem. Buzz is worse, vert. is twitchy, and, horizontal is pulling.
I get a somewhat negative picture at times. It seems to be variable.
I'm wondering it this time another tube failed. Perhaps the 6J6 in the tuner, because now, the fine tunning is even further off than it was.
It was late, so, I went to bed.
I'll do more fiddling with it later today, if I get a chance.
I still need to do something about the speaker, though.............

Sorry, too much to do today, and, too little time. I hope to get back with it later toniight, or tommorrow.....
I have some definate ideas on what to try to get this baby working right, again.
Sorry for my negative mood yesterday. When I posted the negative comments I had had 0 hours of sleep, and, wasn't thinking right. I'm still tired, but, better rested than I was.
I have to admit, I'm glad this bad boy is playing again.

O.K. Tell me this, if you can guys.. Has anybody got one of these sets with the 20X1 chassis with the original field coil speaker? Would you please do me the favor of measuring the resistance of the field coil? I would greatly appreciated that. It's not that I refuse to use a resistor. I am just seening enough differences that I am not sure what resistance to use.
Thanks.

I found the problem with my loud hum. Embarassed I had a poor connection to my cathode on aueio output tube. My bad. Resoldered that, and no hum.
However, my sync went insane again, and, brightness went back down.
Now, I see my used resistors I stole out of other chassis are going south. I'll have to find new ones that are more reliable. That should get my sync back.
I'm even more confused because the speaker field I have in there is 669 ohms, yet, main B+ is up about 398 volts on the other end of that field at 120 volts ac.
Hmmmm.
Yet, focus isn't that great. Hmmm.

Found out other things today.
First, all the channel strips were reversed from the placement of numbers on escutcheon. I had to reverse all the channel strips.
Next, Been finding out from another collector I know that there were a number of changes in focus circuit to make each circuit work properly...
Next, I find that Someone had severely messed with alignment.
This set is a real mess.
First, aI must finnish repairing problems at hand. I have sync issue, and, audio iseue repaired.
Working on the rest, now.

Good news. I found the original spkr. Sure enough. It tests 105 ohms field. Output trans. checked good.
I wired it back up. Looking for a pm speaker.
When it's finnished on that, I'll try it again to see what it does.
Should work better.......................

Problems not solved. Changing field to original only made matters worse. It is now running way too hot on B+.
With fiddling, I was able to improve the focus, and, slightly increase the hv. But, hv is still over 2kv low, and, focus is still at tthe end of it's range. I have louder audio buzz, and, vert. is again unstable.
Further, Horiz. AFC circuit is getting way too mch voltage.
And, it's unstable, also.
Barely locks in, now.
I have tried different resistors on focus control. It slightly decreases voltage, but, then, set goes backwards on hv, and, focus.
This is going to take more time to figure out what's going wrong.

Some good news............ Tonight, I found some off value resistors. Like, way off. Both in the sync circut.
One feeds B+ to plate of sync amp. It should be 47K. However, it had drifted up to 70 K.
Other was a 270 K. It had drifted to 560 K.
I didn't have the correct value, so, I used a 220 K, and, a 33K for a total of 260 K. Close enough.
One of my new caps fell apart. Replaced.
Someone had replaced a mica cap linking video amp to sync amp.
They replaced the original 250mmf with a .02mf.
Oh, boy. I removed that, and, put in a 270mmf cap.
I am in the middle of replacing one very slightly off value resistor in video amp. It's not really bad. It just has too short of leads, so, it won't reach. I decided to just replace it.
It's a 470 K resistor that had floated up to 503 K. Not that far off, really.
Just too hard to physically deal with.
