Actors Empty Actors

Post by terrydec on Sun Sep 23, 2012 2:35 pm

Today I can either work in the basement- Evil or Very Mad or post a fun thread on the forum. Unfortunately I'll probably have to do both.

Anyway- I thought we might talk about actors-who we like and don't like and why. I'd like to impose a few rules though. Let's limit our comments so we don't wind up with long lists and limit the discussion to actors, (which includes actresses), alive today.
More limits might develop as we go along.

I'll start:
My favorite actor today has GOT to be Gary Oldman. In Leon the Professional, True Romance, Batman, Book of Eli and a bunch I've forgotten he truly gets into the part and never imposes his own personality. He IS the character.

In the same vein my LEAST favorite actor is George Cloony. No matter what movie he is in he is still George Cloony. I consider him a personality, not an actor.

Now the argument might be made that other actors like Densil Washington, Morgan Freeman, Ned Beaty or Tom Cruise are the same people in every movie. That's true, but somehow they make the part work for them.

In the actress department I've gotta say that my all time favorite is Uma Thurman. In movies like Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction she is the character, not an 'actress'. My second would be Lucy Liu and then Gwyneth Paltrow.

Somewhere in here I have to mention Jet Li, but he is in a class by himself.

So- wanna play?

I have always liked William (Bill) H Macy. He seems to "bring it" everytime. There is a little known movie named "Door to Door" where he plays a door to door salesman with cerebral palsey. Amazing acting job and an inspirational movie based on a true story. Do yourself a favor and check it out. http://www.amazon.com/Door-Helen-Mirren/dp/B007TBJUVI/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1348425421&sr=1-1&keywords=William+H.+Macy

John Malcovich is right up there. Almost scary good. "In the line of fire" w/ Eastwood where he plays an assassin he scares the hell out of me. Then playing Lenny, in the remake of "Of Mice and Men", was fantastic.

Johnny Depp is fantastic. Very versatile. And hey his good looks gets my wife "in the mood" if ya know what I mean.

Of course the long standing great actors are up there too. Pacino, Deniro, Brando, Nicholson etc.

Oh heck I almost forgot Steve Buschemi. Proof ya don't have to be good looking to be great actor.

Female:

Meryl Streep is the tops for me. Noone can has ever come close. She "brings it" everytime no matter if the movie itself is a stinker. She brings class and style.

Helen Mirren is at the top too.

Sally Field and Sophia Loren are excellent too and very, very easy on the eyes.

I'm in love with Sophia Loren! I love you

I did like Morgan Freeman until I worked on a movie set where he was one of the actors. In my opinion he is a bit full of himself and I didn't like that. Working on a movie changed my opinion on a few actors and how movies are made in general.

Cool- When did you work on a movie set? I used to be a union member (not IATSE, the OTHER union National Association of Broadcast Engineers and Technicians). I did sound for a Terrance Maklik movie, worked as a grip and best boy, did some lighting. I LOVE working on a movie set. Although it sounds trite it is true, the crew becomes a family.

BTW- One of the nicest actors I ever met was Harry Dean Stanton. I worked with him twice. He was a pen pal with my son for a several of years.

As far as Morgan Freeman- MOST famous actors are full of themselves. It comes with the territory. At one time I was a locally 'famous' radio personality. I was so full of myself it leaked out my ears.

Evan Almighty was filmed in Charlottesville Virginia by Universal Studios. I did all their telephone work while filming and you can see my company name in the credits. Each actor had a personal trailer which was moved from the movie set (outside shots) to a sound stage (inside shots) and each time the trailer was moved phone, fax and televison had to be connected and tested in each trailer.

Lauren Graham, John Goodman, and Steve Corell were the nicest people you ever want to meet.

John Goodman...yes. Now there's a guy you'd love to have a sit with and tip a few cold ones.

Corell and Colbert both have that super nice guy reputation following them around. The ONLY time I ever saw Colbert almost get "out of character" on his show was when a womens' rights advocate was his guest and she said "I bet sometimes you can't even stand yourself". She said that jokingly of course. Threw him for a loop.

John Goodman would come back to his trailer and smoke cigars and listen to Frank Sinatra and talk with you like you were old friends. The man is as down to earth as they get!

Worked on a few movie sets. So long as you don't act like a "fan boy" most of the actors are down to earth. Worst position I had to do was what I called "Sittin in the hole" On location we were grabbing power off the main bus bars in the breaker box from a nearby building. Since we had the breaker box cover off someone had to sit by it to keep idiots from sticking their finger in it. Talk about boring.

Sitting around while waiting for the set to be ready is the number one complaint by actors working in film. It is a LOT more fun being part of the crew. The only time that the crew stops working is for the few seconds when the camera is rolling. And of course there are constant retakes from different angles while the actor has to stay in character.
Sometimes I find it hard to watch a movie and forget that there are anywhere from 6 to 20 people standing around behind the camera.

The strangest shoot I was on was with Barbie Benton, (Hugh Hefner's old squeeze), in a Calgon commercial. The camera was 1,500 feet away in the parking lot. It gave a weird perspective to the shot. Then the crew spent a lot of time shooting her in the nude. I had an occasion to talk to her about being nude. I found out it didn't bother her because she had the IQ of a rock.

My new favorite movie is Book of Eli.

William H. Macy was in a good movie called Welcome to Collinwood. It has a little language in it the best I remember but it was funny. They were ex cons who found out where a hidden stash was. As far as Macy goes for those into woodworking so is he. I have seen pictures of his shop.

I have friends that got to spend time with James Woods. He was in my hometown at a state park I use to hang out at filming the Specialist with Stalione. The very beginning of the movie was filmed by the parks dam. They said Woods was a great guy and like one of the locals. They said he was cracking jokes with them. Stalone on the other hand was extremely unfriendly.

As far as others I like Tommy Lee Jones, Cuba gooding Jr in funny movies, Tyler Perry, I think his Uncle Joe is funnier than his Madea character. I mostly like comedys over sad stuff, I told my wife why watch something that is sorrowfull when life is so hard at times. I loved Forrest Gump until the end. Now I will not watch it due to the ending.

I have mostly quit watching shows for the most part.I do like Turtleman.

I think it should include television actors. So, if I may, here are some of mine.
Don Knots-The ghost, and, Mr. chicken.
The entire acting cres of Dark Shadows. The original series.
Shirley Booth in Hazel.
Eve Arden in Our Miss Brooks.
Laurel and, Hardy in everything they've done.
Billy Murray from acoustic days In the voice part of 30's Cartoon In my Merry Oldsmobile.
Bill Murray is Scrooged, and, and, other movies.

I've never been able to watch that movie all the way through. But that's just me.

Note: When I moved I gave up classic cable service, which included HD and a DVR, also channels like FX, AMC, TMC,etc. The one channel I knew I would miss the most was TMC. My basic service gives me about 11 channels that I can watch, (I don't watch any of the 5 shopping channels). However, as I was flipping through all of the numbers guess what? Yep- TCM. That makes me feel better about losing the other 235

A couple of years ago, I picked up a Magnavox dvd/rw recorder. I can record my programs on a rw disc and erase it afterwards or make a dvd to keep. It was $96 and it has been a good investment.

When I was a kid we were flying back to Nashville. There was this guy who got on the plane and sat by me and my mom. He started talking about Hawaii and how he loved living there. He was coming to Nashville to record a song. He was such a nice, friendly, and enjoyable fellow he had everyone listening and asking questions. Even though I was a kid he didn't ignore me and told me about his wonderful homeland. We landed and he went another direction. The people we were around who got off the plane were all asking each other had anyone heard of him, no one knew who Don Ho was at that time. That was just before he was a household name. I still remember that and how nice he was.

Another actor I like a lot is Brad Pitt. In "Burn After Reading" he is such a great preppy nerd, And in True Romance he is the ultimate stoner. "Bring back some beers, and cleaning products".
I'm watching "Mr. and Mrs. Smith' right now. Funny movie.

I have a new favorite movie.
RED with Bruce Willis, Morgan freeman, John Malkovich, (as a participant in a government study where he really WAS given LSD for 11 years), and Helen Mirren.

RED means "Retired Extremely Dangerous"

When ever I watch a Netflix movie twice in a row and then again before the mailman comes I generally buy it. This is a hilarious movie about assassins, government intrusion in private lives, (Satellites-boom, cell phones-boom- Pay phones-boom) , and true love.
Bruce Willis is a retired black ops who just wants to live a regular life, take out the garbage, say hi to his neighbors, put up Christmas decorations and flirt with the girl who sends his retirement checks. However a black ops "wet"team makes a visit. He has to kidnap the girl, (Did you vacuum? Yeah, a little.) and break into the CIA.

Along the way they have to kill the vice president. Sound good? It is and I highly recommend it. In fact I'm going to watch it again right now.

I saw previews of a Steven Spielberg movie regarding Abe Lincoln. Daniel Day Lewis plays Lincoln. Looks good. I think it's out in mid November. Upon finding the trailer I see Sally Field. "I am there dude" as we said back in the day.
