Let's see your phonograph collection.......

Post by Bill Cahill on Tue Aug 07, 2012 1:43 am

I have a great interest in old, especially wind up phonographs.
I think it would be neat to share some of our collection of our toyz.
Let's see what you have..... Smile

O.K. Let me start the show...
First, my restored 1946 Belmont 78 rpm record player....

Next, this is my little Edison Fireside cylinder phonograph before I repainted the original horn.

And, My Edison Home model B cylinder phonograph with original cygnet horn No. 10.

Thanks, Cliff. I only own 6 cylinder players right now, but, I love them all.
I also own 4 diamond disc machines, 1 cheap internal horn Brunswick, and, a small upright Victor Orthophonic I'm restoring.
Not all in the best shape, but, I'm trying.

Cliff, most of my cylinder players I rebuilt from junk parts.
You wouldn't believe the horrible condition of these two when I got them!

Straglers here?
Well, let me show you my latest project.
My small upright Victor Orthophonic victrola.
It's been a project in the making.
I had just finnished ridding it of termites. Fortunately, they haven't been in it long enough to do much dammage.
I had to replace tone arm, which was toast.
I had reproducer partly rebuilt.
I have far to go. Here are pictures.

Well, that's my latest windup phono project.

And, a special thanks to our friend Vitanola because he is supplying the correct tone arm for me... He has a complete nickel one with a non pot metal base. Thank you Vitanola for your help in truly resurecting this machine!!!

Here is one third of my phonograph collection.  This was one of my "toys" when I was a kid of 6.  The rent in the grille cloth was before my time.  The horn was seized on the reproducer tube from storage and it was great fun freeing it up.  It is playing well now and the record on the mandrel in the pic is "Uncle Josh At The Photograph Gallery" by Cal Stewart.

Nice amberola 30. You can get other 4 min. Blue Amberols to play on it as well.
Enjoy your toy.

The Edison Amberolas 30, 50, and, 75 were made approx. from 1914, after the facctory fire, to about 1928. They were among the most popular of the Edison Amberola line.
Before the fire, the machines began with the Amberoa 1A, 1B, V, VIII, ,And, different versions of the Amberola VI.
Somewhere in there fit the X, DX, and, IV. Oh, yes. The Amberola III came out about 1911, and, ceased production after the fire.
The Only outside horn machines popular enough to stay in production were the Opera, and, the School House models.
Blue amberol cylinders ceased production in 1929.

Thanks Bill, I've taken these units for granted so much that I've never researched their history. A big ommission, considering Edison was My "Ideel" when I was growing up.

I still think highly of the man, myself. That's one of the reasons why I restore his machines.

I opened up the other smaller unit and noticed the one first pictured is a 50.  My other one is a 30.  It looks great, but has a bad drive spring. I see one for sale on Ebay for $85.  Is that an acceptable price?

I know croakingfrog, and, have for years. He tends to be pricey, but, I'm going to say on this, go for it.
Please check that backwards check coiled spring that holds the ratchet in check. They tend to break... Mine was broken on mine, but, since it was so gummed up, it barely stayed in check. I have since gotten my spring proffessionally cleanned, and, lubed, I cleanned, and, lubed the motor, and, was able to repair the broken check spring.
These are good machines for what they are...
It's definately worth restoring properly..

My favorite amberola in my collection is my oak Amberola 3.
After that, it's my Fireside, B home with cygnet horn, and, My standard B.

1925 Credenza serial number 633, making it probably the very 1st day of production as the 1st 550 went to dealers
and had special finishes as display models. Very large and heavy set with an electric motor. Sounds wonderful too.
