WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

Post by Motorola man on Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:23 pm

I'm planning on doing a tribute to my grandparents and am looking for a place to start. I want to restore a radio made in 1941 (the year that they were married). I want a console that would have been a higher end radio for it's day, is a good performer and won't break the bank. What model(s) would y'all suggest?
Thanks,
Dave

That depends on what you mean not break the bank.
Zenith radios, evne, that late, aren't cheap.
Perhaps a higher end RCA Victor?
Such as the model 111K?

I'm looking for something unrestored, in the $200 or less range (I prefer the less), which will probably knock any Zenith out of the running. I'm open to any brand.

Sorry, but, unless you are lucky, you are not likely to find a high end radio for that amount.

I had a Philco 41-260, nice radio, good sound. If you are trying to keep all things you mentioned in prospective here your odds are greater if you stay with mass quanity manufactuer
(Philco, Zenith, etc...). Have you looke dat Craigs list? I did a quick search in the Atlanta area on Craig's list and found several prospects.
Good luck and I'm sure your grandparents will be happy with anything you give them.

Blessings,
Ben

I would look into a Philco. There have been a number of really nice radios on the Atl Craigslist in recent months. Even a couple of Zenith chairsides and 3 or 4 zenith consoles at nice prices. And a couple of Philco consoles of that time frame.

I started watching CL a few days ago & I'll be checking with my fellow SARS members. I'm in no hurry, just started my search. When the right radio comes along, I'll jump on it. 19&41 if you come across anything good up in your neck of the woods, let me know.
Thanks,

Just saw an ad on cl under antiques search "radio". It wasn't made in 1941, but the radio is incorporated into a [grandfather] clock. it might be worth a look

There were such radios mostly in the 30's. They are collector's items. Might be worth going after.
Check on it, and, price. Let us see it so we can help you on value.

I am fortunate to own a Philco 40-180. This 7 tube radio outperforms some of the 15 tubers that I own. For an all-around good performing radio, I say it can't be beat. The 40-180 is common as dirt and not expensive. The cabinet is attractive and it is not huge, like some console radios are.

Just a thought.

After broadening my search a bit, I've come across a few candidates for my next restoration. One in particular has grabbed my attention, but I'm not really familiar with it and haven't been able to get the model number yet. It is a mid to late 30's Wurlitzer console in fair shape cosmeticly. It will need some veneer work for sure. Does anyone have experience with Wurlitzer radios? Of course their juke boxes and organs are legendary, but did they make a decent radio? Would it be worth the $75 that they're asking for it, or would I be better off with a Philco or Atwater Kent of the same era (they're in the same price range)?

Never seen a Wurlitzer radio. I'd say it's worth going after.

Found this online. Sorry I didn't mention these latest radios on CL, but I thought they were outside your search criteria.

All I can say is if I was offered that radio, I'd definately want it. Good luck getting it.

If that Wurlitzer doesn't pan out, this Case set looks pretty good.

They person with the Wurlitzer still hasn't gotten in touch with me, so I'm just going to assume that it's no longer available. The Case set does look pretty good. I'm also considering the grandfather clock / radio. I'm going to give it a little more time. Hopefully the price will come down a bit, or maybe something better may get listed. Thanks for keeping a look out for me.

I am not sure how far you want to go or to wait to get it but the Music City radio club will have their fall meeting in the early part of October. I have not found much lately in the local public but I do there. I have bought radios from 5 to 30 bucks. Kelton Trammel there finds a lot of stuff. I always go to his and see what he has. I think I have bought something from every meet I have been at.

I picked up my next project yesterday. It's a Howard model 418. It's clean and in great shape with only a few minor blemishes in the original finish. I've got a couple radios that are in line before I can get started on this one, but I'm looking forward to getting in to it.
