Edison Model A150 Diamond Disc machine The cabinet arrived.......

Post by Bill Cahill on Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:16 am

Well, thank heavens I was finally able to do it!!
Let me tell you a very true story.....

About 44 years ago, at about the ripe old age of 17, I bought a very rough Diamond Disc phonograph from a dealer friend in Detroit. Some of you may remember him. His name was Baily Teeters...
I didn't have much money, and, it didn't cost much. At the time it was playing, but, the cabinet a total wreck!
Legs cut off, badly home made grill, Very bad veneer job on crank side with Japanese veneer, and, slapped on top of original bad veneer.
Case had fallen apart, so, he nailed it in manny places with ten penny nails.
I didn't have much money, so, I ended up paying about 30.00 playing with a repaired main spring. Nut, and, bolt, that is..
Despite that, It managed to play 1.5 records at one winding.
Years later, I foolishly traded it off. He used some of the parts from it. The collector was someone I knew in Dearborn by the name of Charles Greggory.
Years later, he mad a mint off me because my friend Baily had died, and, I wanted that machine, hoping someday to get a better cabinet for it.
I've now had that machine again for I think 30 years.
I still have it to this day, but, the reproducer went to places unknown.

Come the last couple days, guess what!!
I found the case, in Washington state.
I contacted the owner, and, he agreed to ship it if I won it.
Last night I won it...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Edison-Model-AT ... fresh=true

I am so excited!
I now have hopes of getting the empty almost complete case for my machine!
Hopefully, I'll have it in the next couple of weeks, or, so..
I will transfer my parts to this case, and, start looking for the remainder of the parts I need....
When finnished, yes, I will have too much in it, but, I will have my dream machine restored, and, saved for future generations. I'll eventually replace main spring, also...
I am just excited about this!!!!
Bill Cahill Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Smile

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it arrives in one piece. Those legs look like they could snap off easily. After all its being shipped across the country. Hopefully shipping will be reasonable.

I just love this machine. Maroon bedplate with pin striping.
Maroon wood grainned horn.
Gold plating on parts is shot. This is not the standard DD motor. It's not the same as the belt dive of the B 80, and, B 60. It's gear driven, but, different from other DD motors. It's a transitional.

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Well, it happenned. He lied to me, and, I won't see cabinet.
Today he called with a stupendous lie that UPS told him it would cost 1,500.00 to ship it to me. He offered my money back. I asked him to look for other places.

In the meantime, I looked up all the information presently availlable on it, height, weight, size, lenghth, where it is, and, where it's to go to, and, called UPS. Their story is totally different.
While my friend got the wrong info. last night, I got two estimates from UPS, one of one size, and, weight, and, other with higher numbers.
The figures they gave are 108.00, and, 128.00.
Quite different from the figure he gave me.
I tried calling him back twice today. Left him two friendly voice mails with correct information, and, said "Someone must have given you the wrong numbers." I even said if he has a problem with taking it to UPS that I'd pay for them to pick it up.
He has not called me back, and, quite frankly, looks like I've been screwed.
If this doesn't get worked out soon, I will leave negative feedback on him, and, complain to ebay.
If ebay gives me a stink, I'll close my account with them. Period...
Sad Sad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I've tried contacting him. He clearly doesn't want to talk to me. He's ignoring me. My opinion is he found another buyer behind my back. It's mine, and, I'm obviously not getting it.
If he refunds my money, I will leave neutral feedback with comment.
If he doesn't, I'll leave negative feedback.
In either case, I will complain to ebay.
I'm very angry ablut this.
He clearly lied, and, cheated me.

Well, it changed again. I didn't hear the phone ring last night, but, upon getting home from shopping today, I found I had a message from the guy in Washington..

He now says he re checked the pricing, fioung out they put down the wrong figures. Now, between my estimate, and, his, he believes it's shipable.
Let's all stay on the edge of our seats on this one.

I may have some good news....
After going around in circles with the guy, yesterday morning, he admitted he'd been getting quotes from his local UPS store. They tack on their own charges, often making it alot more expensive.
They told him the over the counter price for main UPS branch came to 118.00. I told him that's acceptable.
He's going to call them when they open Monday afternoon their time. He'll confirm it. If they agree, he'll finnish making arangements with me, and, start packing...
I may be getting it yet. Sure hope so......

What do you think your chances are that it will make it to you still in one piece? Were you planning to break it down, reglue and maybe refinish? Good luck...30 years is a long time to wait.

What waitint?? You think it's easy to find this model?? I've been actively looking for a better cabinet since I bought it as a teen ager. Many years collectors told me I'd never find one...
This cabinet cannot be knocked down. It's glued together.
I've been warning him on extremely good packing.
I either take this one, or fess up to not being able to do it. Period...
This was not a well sold model....

O'contreir guru of the radio and crank'em up world. I have disassembled many peice even older than that. The age of that player it would be glued with horse hide glue. Just wet the joints with denatural alcohol and gently wingle them. Keep doing that a few times, a few light taps with a block of wood and hammer, it will come out like butter. But if it "ain't broke, don't fix it".
I'm happy you will finally realize your dream. Have fun with it.

I don't think you've seen this cabinet. The lets run all the way up, and, all the molding, and, sides are glued to them.
It would be a major jig saw puzzle.
He is not likely going to be interested in trying to knock it apart.
And, right now, all joints are tight, and, nothing wiggles.
I'd rather find a way to secure it for shipping.

Sorry, I guess we are on different pages here. I was not suggecting he dismember it to ship. I was asking if you were going to dismember it and reglue after you received it. You are soooooo right about the zigsaw puzzle affect here. When I dismember any furniture piece I take pictures of every step and still sometimes it is hard to tell which way to put it back together. Fortunately I have lots of experience in that area so it makes it much easier. I have not found UPS and FedX to be the best source for shipping large delicate item. While they are "on time" and insured they seem unable to comprehend the word "FRAGILE". I had a Stickly rocker (NYC) and an 1840's hand carved mirror frame(Charleston) shipped on Greyhound bus. True someone has to take it to GH and someone has to pick it up but it is all in one piece, unharmed. Just an option to consider.
Regarless of how it it shipped I'm certain you will do whatever is necessary to see your baby looking proud. Good luck.

Re: Edison Model A150 Diamond Disc machine The cabinet arrived.......

Post by Bill Cahill on Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:44 pm

Thanks. Wish I could go Greyhound. Nearest one is in N Clearwater by one of the busiest hubs, and, 6 lane traffic.
I can't find any one that will go there.... Miserable traffic...
Speaking of jigsaw puzzles... I had one gluing cabinet back together on my 1950 16" round tube Admiral tv.
Alot of support items were broken, broken loose, and, one leg was broken off.
Boy, I was sweating it out on that set. I made only one mistake, on a bottom support board in the back, so, it rocks some. My bad. But, minor, and, otherwise, set is fine. I even have chassis perfectly centerred. Control shafts, and, pix tube are centered exactly in the middle where they belong.
I don't like original design of this set. While the bottom back board accross back of set did hold it together, it offered NO support for legs. Jostling it around broke one of the back curved legs. I had to glue it back on. Had no way to add any other support, so, deliverately lowered that one board to add support to both rear legs. That wasn't such a great factory design....
At least now, that leg is less likely to break back off....
The problem was with my judgement on how low to put that board. I made it slightly too low on one side, so, it lifts that side of set up slightly. Need to work on that....

I am cautionning thie guy to pack cabinet very well. I need it to come in one piece.....
I know Washington is pretty far away, but, I had little choice. This is a fairly rare model machine, and, I rarely see machine come up for sale, and, this is the first time I've seen the cabinet for sale. I still have to replace the oak case on my Edison Amberola 3, which is basically the same case, but, a cylinder player with a transversing mandrel, like the Edison Opera. I love that machine. Can't have opera, but, I love my 3.. Plays great!

You just can't seem to catch a break on this deal. The good thing is it is made of wood and there's nothing on wood that can't be fix, remade or repaired. Hope you get it soon so you can rest your mind. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help,

How much is it worth to you to have someone come pick it up, pack it and deliver?
Did you check with (http://usapackship.com)? Or is he even willing to do that? You thinking maybe he found a hight bidder or sellers remorse?

I think it's seller's remorse. It's not my fault he didn't put a reserve on it...
Most people are turned off by a pick up only.
I don't have endless funds. I'm on dissability, and, it's my only income. I have to rob Peter to pay Paul.
I would have done all I could to work with the guy.
