I haven't seen one like this either. I have been wanting a Zenith with the "Robot Dial". Now I have one. This is only a 7 tube unit with 6" speaker, and from what I have read about it, some say that it's performance is ok, but not nearly as good as the 10 and 12 tube units with bigger speaker. I'm still very excited about it. The dial is so clean as is the inside and the wood is in such good shape. I can't wait to see if it works. Would you go ahead and fire it up using a variac to bring it up slowly or would you recap it first then fire it up?

first check the field winding for opens and shorts, then the power transformer. If they have problems then installing the caps may blow the caps if there is a short somewhere. Then replace the caps. and before turning it on check the tubes for shorts. Then slowly bring it up.

Inspect the power cord too. Not as easy to remove the chassis like a regular console or tombstone style cabinet.Still well worth restoring.

Thanks Doug I will definitely check the cord. Keep the tips coming. Has anyone here at TRF restored one of these Zenith chairside models?

Not Zenith, but, others. Chassis wouldn't be that different.
What do you want to know??

No specific question yet. Just thought that if someone had restored a Zenith chairside, they might know of certain things(specific to a Zenith chairside) to look out for or be careful of. I am always looking to draw on somebody's experience especially when I am entering uncharted territory. I've never had a chairside. Anyway, just hoped that someone had totally restored one of these and would know it inside and out. Thanks.

To my knowledge, all Zeniths more, or, less share the same problems.
Broken dial belts.
Bad plastic knobs.
Bad rubber wirring.
If it is one that uses 2 6X5 rectifier tubes, it is prone to tube failure in older tubes, and, with that power transformer dammage.
Bad rubber power cords.
Etc....

I picked up a chairside similar to it a couple of months ago. I have not done anything to it other than looking it over. From what I can tell it is a lot like other zeniths I have restored just a different case. So I think yours will be a lot like other radios, just a different case. On any radios ,take your time,be carefull and just enjoy the fixing of it.

I plan on having a lot of fun restoring it. I am very excited. I love it's styling and the robot dial. I probably won't start it until Winter though. I have a Motorola that I want to finish first. I may not be able to wait til Winter though.
