Hello from San Diego

Post by Fred Longworth on Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:01 am

My name is Fred Longworth. I'm the owner of Classic Audio Repair in San Diego (est. 1994.) I've been repairing audio and radio gear since 1973, and I'm still learning. To put it another way, at 65 my rate of learning still exceeds my rate of forgetting! Posts under my name may also come from my talented employee, Jordan Pier. Previously, I've been posting at Audio Karma and the Antique Radio Forums.

Right now, sitting on my bench at the store, is a Harman Kardon A-300 that has been "modded" by three different techs at varying levels of skill. One of them in his infinite wisdom disconnected the phono preamp, and since the cathode resistor for the quad of output tubes is the filament line for the phono preamp tubes, he replaced the filament line with a 10 watt resistor. Unsurprisingly, the owner of the A-300 wants to play records, so my first task is to reverse the mod.

Wish me luck!

Fred

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you have a great project there. Post often, with pictures.
Thanks!

Welcome to the board. I just got through with one of those amps, I think it was the same model. When it was done it was playing good. I don't think anyone had changed anything to that extent. If you need the diagram let me know. I think I have it and can send a email to you. PM me if you need it as I might forget to check this post again.

Thanks to all! I do have some questions about the A-300. I'll post them in a separate thread.
