GE J 805 help

Post by RandyVan on Mon Feb 06, 2012 6:06 pm

I have recently acquired one of these radios and would like to know where I might be able to find parts, all tubes, knobs, etc. I am trying decide if I can refurb it or not. I did an old montgomery ward radio a number of years ago, didn't need as many parts as this one though.

May we see a pic of your GE radio? Knobs, tubes and such can of course be found on Ebay. I recently purchased a tube from someone on Ebay, it was very reasonable and it seems like he had a rather large selection here is a link to him. http://stores.ebay.com/Radiotinkerers-Vintage-Electronics?_trksid=p4340.l2563. Good luck with your radio and keep us posted of your progress. Oh, and welcome to TRF. Smile

Welcome to the forums.
I have a model J-805, and, let me gladly help you....

First, a warning. These radios have all rubber wiring. Chances are high it will need some, most, or, all replaced. That may be trouble.
If the knobs are gone, the original style is kind of tough to come by.
The tubes, on the other hand, are easy.
5Y3 rect.
2 6V6 push-pull audio out.
6J5 Audio inverter.
6SQ7 Detector, and, first audio amp.
6SK7 I F amplifier.
6SK7 I F amplifier.
6SA7 Converter, and, oscilator.
All common tubes......

uses a special 12" spkr. with a 14" metal frame.
Lenghth of wires on am drum antenna, even placement of same, is extremely crittical. The instructions on tunning of set clearly states that in order to do a correct alignment of the set the set must be completely mounted in its' case. This is due to the especially crittical nature of this wirring.
The good news is once properly done, these radios play extremely well with decent treble, and, a deep, resonant bass. The reception is also excellent.
I highly reccommend this set. I also highly like the art deco cabinet. Set dates to 1938.
Please let us see pictures so we may help you.
Thank you.

Since Bill mentioned the Alignment, then as you repace the wires, take photos before you replace them. It might make a big difference in the wire and component posistions. Another place for parts is Justradios.com sunny
