Newly into Tube Radio in Lower Michigan

Post by Cathode Glow on Fri Dec 23, 2011 10:30 pm

Hello all....just took an interest into restoring a vintage Wells Gardner 6A27 radio I have.....and tube radios in general. I took the handle " Cathode Glow " because....well....that is what the sight is inside the radio back....and it seemed to be fitting !! The WG picks WGAR only....and has a huge amount of AC hum !!! The cabinet is in good shape !! Only missing a 4.5" x 1.75" bezel which frames the pre-set station buttons....Oh...can one purchase a restoration bezel ??? I could machine one out of brass !!

I have a basic understanding of electronics...very basic....and would like to attempt to recap this unit. I found a schematic on line. I will possibly turn to this group for some guidance !!! I have a scope....but no signal generator. I would like to pick up a used one. I bought my scope used....seems to work....there is a huge book just to operate this....and I have very limited knowledge of how to use my scope !!! I have soooo much to learn....but there is the fun....and I am in no hurry.

I am looking to read some beguiner books on repair.....and start down the path of learning !! I have just started to explore your site....so I am sure I will find some suggestions here !! My background is Ceramic Engineering....not real helpful here. If anyone has any beguiner type suggestions....I will greatly welcome them !!! Merry Christmas !!

Thanx,
Bob
