GE RADIO MODEL 414

Post by fr66ed on Sat May 14, 2011 4:03 pm

I have a 1950 GE tube radio model 414. problem i am having is when i turn radio on it plays then all of a sudden i lose station and all I can hear is static. I then retune it and it comes back on. It keeps repeating this. Any suggestions is this is tube or what?

I won't likely be a tube. Before you run it again, you should look into replacing at least the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply circuit. That would be the 30mfd and 50mfd capacitors.

I would also suspect that the tuning condenser is either, shorting in the plates, or bad grounding wiper (if it has one) needs to be cleaned and the bearings also if it has those. Check volume control could be intermittent. Hard telling without seeing the problem first hand. Sometimes you can have a failing tube, or small capacitor breaking down. Check all connections for cold solder joints.

Let it play and gently tap each tube and see if station goes a way..Check all tube pins make sure they are clean and not bent and fit tight in the sockets.. Sprman : )

Like graylok said. Look for a leaky cap.
