steinite 102a

o.k i'll put up a biggee.
the victim is a steinite 102a if i remember right-dual 350's for output. the power supply was forcefully removed by dropping it out of the cabinet thereby detaching the 14 odd wires from the main chassis. after days of research and much work i finally figured out the connections so i could reattach the pwr supply and low and behold the behemoth sprang to life! but not the phono,anyone know how to check one of these old phono heads?the motor runs fine and i can hear music at the needle but nothing out of the speaker.

hi ken,it's a '29 radio/phono so no cartridge.it's one of those that uses steel needles.

o.k. i checked coil resistance at the head,2.2k so i'm guessing that's in the ballpark. on the schematic i don't even see the phono input,i need someone else to peek at it.
the pickup wires go to a control panel that has a switch-radio/phono- and a volume control,where would the head wires connect? the ends of the volume control? with them hooked there i get quiet output of phono out of the speaker.
the volume control is marked 50m-probably k-and measures about 70k.

The problem with these old magnetic pick-ups is the rubber gaskets dry out, and, the needle chuck quits moving within the magnet's field.
There are reliable rebuilders out there that will do a quality job re building it to like new condition.
