Caps~Cond~ and resistors question

OK, I have been reading and I intend to replace the Capacitors in a Grundig Majestic.
I have a detailed list straight from the schematic.
Now, after reading and reading I have questions.
It's recommended to replace all the Capacitors, OK, Now there are 10 listed Caps,
Now resistors, Well there are 40+
And no list for condensors, But a new to me Philco has caps and Conds listed.
Are they the same thing?
Do I need to replace all the resistors in the grundig too?
My girl bought home the grundig and plugged it in and played it for about 4 hours till it only hummed, She got it for me for X-Mas,
Now it is time to fix it!!!!!
Should I just order up the Caps?
Get them from radio shack?

What are the values of the condensers?
I have seen condensers be electrolytics, I've seen them being all capacitors, and, I've seen them as being only adjustable capacitors.
Depends on the mannufacturer, and, the set.
I wouldn't just replace all the resistors. Check them first.
All of them.
Above 20 percent, usually not good.
Alot of German radios also used selenium rectifiers.

How loud is your hum?

hum is not load, But no stations which I did have when she played it to humming.

Caps and Condensors = same thing. I'd replace ALL electrolytics without a doubt. Also very suspect would be all paper capacitors (bypass caps & coupling caps) Pay particular attention to coupling/bypass caps in the output stage. Of a more minor concern would be extremely low value caps (Pico Farad range) ,usually mylar, in the RF sections. If you find any of those that may be shorted - replace with mylar type replacements.
It's doubtful that you would find most values anymore at Radio Shack. I have a local supplier that carries the normal values of poly type caps at 630V. (to replace most of the paper caps in Antique radios) Electrolytics can be replaced with higher values than originals ,but I wouldn't go more than double. It's best not to stray to far on the "input" electrolytic ...(first in the "PI" filter.)
All these caps can be purchased at several places on-line. I just prefer to buy locally - where I can walk in the store and walk out with my caps. a little pricier than on-line, but I don't pay for shipping either.

If you havent purchased caps yet go to justradios.com . You can tell them what radio you have they will sell you a kit.
They also have resistors.

I strongly recommend you replace the caps one at a time, then chck to see if the radio works as well as it did before you replaced the cap. It's tempting to make a wholesale replacement, but if you make one mistake in installing you'll have a big problem finding the cause.
